I follow the guidelines stipulated in Nature first. I mostly photograph local areas and avoid intercontinental travels, because I strive to reduce my carbon footprint. Another reason for favouring local areas is that these are easy to access and become familiar with, which is important for creating personal images. I categorize my images according to location and I provide captions tying in the images to these locations, even though they may be inconspicuous and unknown to the public at large; I am sceptical about the modernist ethics of de-contextualizing nature.
In the tradition of landscape photography, the picturesque, depopulated and non-industrialized landscape is often favoured as a subject. Although I admit that I find such areas deeply fascinating, I have some ethical reservations about making them the exclusive subject of my landscape photography: It is dishonest, as far as our modern world is often very different; it tends to generate overtourism in ecologically sensitive areas; and it distracts us from finding beauty in nearby and easily ignored areas at the edges of human habitats. For these reasons, I include areas marked by human presence in my photographs.
